NOTE: Effective Jan 1 2016, this organization became an independent, non-profit Sound Water Stewards of Island County and will continue the same activities..

The Island County Beachwatcher program began in 1989, and was the first Beach Watcher program administered by the WSU Island County Extension. WSU Beach Watcher headquarters are at the Admiralty Head Lighthouse, and they have trained over 500 volunteers who work on all areas of Island County.

A major educational outreach program is the Sound Waters one-day university for all, always held on the first Saturday in February on Whidbey Island.

For a description and slideshow of what these dedicated volunteers do, please see http://whidbey-eco.net/january-2015-spotlight-wsu-island-county-beach-watchers/

New volunteers receive 100 hours of expert training from top professionals, and agree to give back those hours over the next two years. Training begins again in March 2016.
